As our country is just beginning to see the
implications of this virus on not only our people but our economy, there will
certainly be a lot of changes and moving in the next several months and maybe
even years. There are already families who are losing their homes because of
this crisis. People are being forced out of work because their businesses have
closed down. It is almost impossible to find another job and interview because
no one else is hiring right now. Unemployment sites are taking hours to load
and complete because of how many people are on the server at once. Thousands of
people are left unsure about what they are going to do next. Rent and mortgages
are due in the next few days and many people don’t have the funds for that
right now.
Maybe they will have the funds this next month
and maybe the month after that, but what about four months from now? There is
no guarantee that anything will even be open by that point. More things could
be shut down by then, too. More and more people will continue to lose their
jobs and be unable to support themselves or their families. The house and
senate have talked about freezing rent and mortgage payments during this
crisis, but this has not become a reality as of yet. People might be out of
luck before something like that gets passed.
Something that has been proposed by local
governments are temporary housing and shelters to go up all around the city.
This could be tricky because you don’t want to spread the virus, but you also
don’t want people to be without a home. Office type buildings or schools have
many rooms that can be closed off to prevent people from gathering and
spreading the virus.
Luckily, there are still people who are going
to be unaffected by this. My partner and I both have jobs funded by the
government and so we do not think our livelihood is going to be taken away
anytime soon. What can people like us do to help?
If these plans to relocate people move ahead,
these families will need cheap moving boxes. They have belongings they need to
take with them to their new homes and cheap moving boxes will provide them with
storage to move their belongings. There will be a drop off cite to donate these
boxes or to pitch in a few extra dollars to help purchase and provide these
surfaces for people.
